Living on a shoestring budget - as I'm currently doing - sucks for obvious reasons, but it's exquisitely painful when you're a incurable gourmet. So lately, I've been frequenting restaurants that offer decent meals at cut rate prices. I think Banh Mi & Che Cali in San Gabriel, with other locations in Alhambra, Monterey Park, and Rosemead, fits in this category.

Banh mi is tops for good food in exchange for very little money. At Banh Mi & Che Cali, you can get

one free sandwich if you buy two and their banh mi costs only 2.5 USD per to begin with. Also, you can get two milk teas with boba for the price of one (2 USD).

In addition to banh mi, Banh Mi & Che Cali sells prepackaged meals, snacks, che, and even pho.

What I ate: I dropped by Banh Mi & Che Cali during lunchtime on a Sunday. Rather than eating in their crowded dining room, I went to a nearby park to savor the outdoors and devour my banh mi.

1. Thai Tea (2 USD). To drink, I got two Thai Teas. (Don't forget, two for the price of one!). They were mixed properly and not overly saccharine.

2. BBQ Pork Banh Mi (2.5 USD) - barbecued pork with lemongrass flavor, pickled carrots and daikon (do chua), sliced jalapeño. There was too much meat packed into the sandwich, throwing off the balance between textures and flavors, which required some removal. In addition, the BBQ pork was not of the best quality. I didn't much enjoy this particular banh mi.

3. Ham and Headcheese Banh Mi (2.5 USD) -
sliced ham, sliced headcheese, pâté, mayo, soy sauce, pickled carrots and daikon, sliced jalapeño. Unlike the BBQ Pork Banh Mi, I did enjoy the Ham and Headcheese Banh Mi. (I was glad I got two of these.) The flavors and textures mingled nicely and I remember tasting pleasant hits of soy sauce in the spread. I thought the pâté and mayo spread was the crucial element in this sandwich.

The banh mi baguette used for both sandwiches was very good. It had a crackly crust and wasn't too doughy or chewy: it was just right.

One missing requisite was the cilantro garnish. I don't think banh mi is quite complete without it.

Parking: There's enough parking for the lunch crowd at Banh Mi & Che Cali thanks to the presence of HK Supermarket. I have seen the parking lot get wild, however, mostly in the evenings.

The Bill: 7.61 USD.

My Rating: No star out of four stars (satisfactory). Banh Mi & Che Cali doesn't have the best banh mi out there, but their Ham and Headcheese Banh Mi is decent and you can get three for five bucks - amazing! Open everyday, 6 AM to 10 PM. Credit cards accepted.
